Our Purpose

to help the town pass and uphold an organic grounds maintenance policy--based primarily in children's health concerns--for its town property, parks, school grounds and athletic fields. Citizens for a Green Scarborough (CGS) emerged in 2011 as a concerned citizens' response to the use of synthetic pesticides in the town of Scarborough, Maine. Since the policy was enacted in September 2011, the group continues to be challenged to uphold and protect the policy, and dedicates itself to educating citizens about its benefits. CGS worked tirelessly in 2012 to accomplish the following: successful defense of the policy against change attempts by a pro-chemical town councilor 04/12; Paul Tukey public lecture 04/12; organic garden open house 07/12; Summerfest outreach table 08/12; hosting Green Corps students campaigning locally against pesticides 08/12; public environmental visioning event 09/12; and election day outreach table 11/12.
