Charlotte Library Seed Library
Our Purpose
This is a project of the Charlotte Library, to encourage and support our community’s home food producers and seed savers. It is part of a network of Seed Libraries and Seed Savers worldwide, which promote the growing of heirloom varieties. First and foremost, the Seed Library provides a bank of seeds to check out, with the implied promise that if your gardening efforts are successful, you'll replace the seeds you 'borrowed' from the Seed Library by agreeing to give them some of the seeds that your new plants produced. Implementation of this project has included a variety of programs such as a permaculture-based landscape design series; film showings; and individual programs focusing on climate-forward, environmentally-minded garden practices. In addition, the Seed Library maintains the library demonstration garden, providing produce for the local food shelf and inspiration for local gardeners. Partners for these programs include NOFA-VT, Slow Food Vermont as well as local groups such as the Charlotte Senior Center, the Charlotte Congregational Church, the Charlotte Grange, the Charlotte Community Composters, and Transition Town Charlotte. With all of these activities, the overarching goal remains to provide access to good, local food and to nurture the community that develops around shared seeds, gardens and harvests.
