Our Purpose

The purpose of Cape Downwinders is to raise awareness and educate our local communities about the ongoing public health and safety issues during decommissioning of the Pilgrim nuclear power station in Plymouth and the spent nuclear waste storage facility and to effect change to protect our communities.  Cape Downwinders has been an active group since the 1980's, working to protect public health and safety from the Pilgrim nuclear reactor dangers.  With the Pilgrim closure date of June 1, 2019, we are entering the most dangerous phase.  Our goal is engage diverse  communities to come together to protect the public and environment with a new focus on safe and responsible decommissioning and secure hardened on-site storage of the nuclear waste. We are working to protect Cape Cod Bay from radioactive waste water dumping by Holtec Decommissioning International by coordinating a new coalition, Save Our Bay.
