Our Purpose

Boston Farms Community Land Trust turns vacant urban land into collective opportunity, supporting neighborhood farmers to grow the food that sustains us.  Urban agriculture provides a path of equity for black and brown neighborhood residents to gain a stake in a thriving, green economy, by transforming underutilized land into anchors of neighborhood vitality and stability.  We envision a city full of thriving neighborhood farms, which community members can access as farmers, neighbors, or households seeking fresh food.  Boston Farms was founded to support those who have been marginalized within our food system. To do this, we created a community-led framework to acquire and protect urban farmland, making it accessible to neighborhood residents, and supporting the success of farmers with financial, marketing, and technical assistance, while they operate as independent entrepreneurs.  We are focused in the Mattapan, Dorchester, and Roxbury neighborhoods.  We have developed and own 5 farmsites, with plans to expand over the next several years. Please Note:  In 2017, when Boston Farms spun off from our close partner organization, the Urban Farming Institute (UFI), we were originally named the Urban Farming Community Land Trust.  We voted in 2020 to change our name to Boston Farms to distinguish our mission from UFI’s mission
