Boston Center for Community Ownership
Our Purpose
Boston Center for Community Ownership supports cooperative businesses in working class communities, immigrant communities, and communities of color in Boston and throughout New England. We strive to empower workers with entrepreneurial competencies to help them get free from the economic consequences of racism, colonialism, and corporate capitalism, and to pre-figure the sustainable, inclusive social economy of the not-too-distant future. We envision a just and sustainable economy, where all people’s basic needs are guaranteed, where work is safe, dignified, democratic, and meaningful, where wealth is shared by all members of society, where each person’s creativity and innovation are celebrated and rewarded, and their abilities and understanding of the world are nurtured. We believe in the strength and abilities of oppressed people, and that the empowerment of those with less wealth and fewer privileges is critical to achieving the just and sustainable economy we envision.BCCO is a worker self-directed non-profit that uses a community organizing approach to co-op development. We provide organizing support in English and Spanish for startup co-ops and co-op conversions, as well as ongoing training and technical assistance for existing co-ops. Our Co-op Organizers have extensive experience in cooperatives and small businesses, and we provide hands-on assistance in everyday business skills, as well as leadership development for co-op members.
