Bennington County Window Dressers
Our Purpose
WindowDressers brings community volunteers of all economic and social situations together to improve the warmth and comfort of interior spaces, lower heating costs, and reduce carbon dioxide pollution by producing low-cost insulating window inserts that function as custom, interior-mounted storm windows. Volunteers in Bennington County have actively sought to connect with individuals for whom these inserts are not just a convenience but a matter of being able to reduce, and thus pay, their heating bills. As a result, our builds have achieved as much as 55% of inserts going, at no cost, to lower income families. In 2019, members of several Bennington County energy committees learned of WindowDressers (WD) at an Energy and Climate conference and decided over lunch to work together to form both north and south county builds. Our county has a high energy burden due to our old housing stock and several high-poverty census tracks. Our model of hosting two collaborating Builds, one in Bennington (Southshire) and one in Manchester (Northshire) is unique among WD. Our aim is to utilize the builds as a springboard to further connect interested recipients with a broader range of free or low-cost services. We partner with the Bennington-Rutland Opportunity Council (BROC) by connecting interested clients to their weatherization services. Those not eligible for BROC are referred to NeighborWorks. Efficiency Vermont provides rebates and is also another source of referrals.
