Our Purpose

The Bennington County Solid Waste Alliance's Compost group is working to move families and area insitutions toward zero waste through education and community action. We promote education around both backyard and institutional composting through conversations, events, and direct action.  The group is facilitating a transition from single-use serving ware items such as plates, cups and utensils to certified compostable and re-usable materials at area events and in institutions including schools and medical facilities in our county.   The Compost group has been active for approximately 18 years but had a single focus of providing volunteers to separate food scraps from recyclables and trash at the annual Garlic Town festival until two years ago.  The group expanded membership and purpose by organizing a Compost Fun Faire in collaboration with the Bennington Community Garden last year. Following this event, the compost group formally came under the umbrella of the Bennington County Solid Waste Alliance.
