Our Purpose

Barnard Place Park is a volunteer, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in South Boston consisting of 16 Barnard Place residents who are building a beautiful, public park for the community to enjoy. We see Barnard Place Park as a welcoming respite from the busy city in which we live. Our design includes a memorial bench, a wheelchair-accessible vegetable bed, trees, shrubs, a butterfly garden, bistro-style seating, and a bocce court to honor the history of bocce that was played on this land decades ago. We have cared for this city-owned parcel for more than 30 years. In 2020, we secured the deed to the land to revitalize it as public, open space to provide enjoyment of nature, relaxation, a low-impact recreational experience and bring people together to engage with one another. By purchasing the land to revitalize the area, we are creating a pleasurable open space that will reassure the future preservation of this environmentally important land in a city that is quickly losing its green space. The Edgerley Family South Boston Boys & Girls Club is creating a gardening program for its pre-teen members to cultivate gardening skills and give back to the community as hands-on volunteers— digging in to install Barnard Place Park’s first round of plantings.  It is a true, partnership through which the Club will use Barnard Place Park as an on-going laboratory to teach members about growing and caring for vegetables, herbs, pollinators, and trees.
