Our Purpose

We are a group of environmentally concerned citizens in Belfast, Maine, who are pursuing the goal of banning single-use plastic bag use at all retail outlets in Belfast, while encouraging the use of re-usable shopping bags.  We share a deep appreciation of Belfast's beautiful situation on Penobscot Bay and we hope to be instrumental in protecting our coastline and our water quality for both commercial and recreational uses for the present and in the future.  The six group members came together to pursue this mission after completing the Penobscot Bay Stewards Program, a month-long collaboration between the Maine Coastal Program of the State Planning Office and the Belfast Bay Watershed Coalition.
