Our Purpose

Our mission statement is: to inventory and preserve our natural and cultural resources, to encourage community involvement in conservation efforts and outdoor recreation, and to promote conservation education in the Town of Bakersfield. We organized in 2009 and all of our activities have been guided by this mission ever since. We have conserved a 4 acre Town Park, constructed a trail there, installed a path and steps, recruited volunteers for trail maintenance, removing invasive species, cleaning up trash, etc.; raised funds by doing a Culvert Inventory (Better Back Roads); accessed expert assistance from many organizations such as NPS, VYCC, ANR; sponsored educational programs, films and events regularly; did an Emerald Ash Borer survey; constructed the Shattuck Mountain Trail, situated on conserved land, which culminates in a high ridge overlooking an expansive view to the south; and collaborated with our local Scout Troop to secure a $1500 RiseVT Amplifier grant to improve access and signage on this trail. We recieved a Grow Grant from NEGRF in 2020 to establish a Community Pollinator Garden in our Town Park. We are sponsoring a No Mow May initiative in our Park this season and are involved in public outreach and education for our community. Our purpose is to benefit our environment, educate the public on environmental issues, and create opportunities for recreation and public outdoor events in our town..
