Our Purpose

Our goal is to help build a movement to prevent nuclear war – a peril that is greater now than ever.  The Back from the Brink Western Mass Hub is dedicated to educating local communities about the dangers we face and building a new generation of activists working to eliminate monstrously dangerous and expensive U.S. nuclear weapons programs, which do not make us safer. A war of even less than 0.5% of the world’s nuclear weapons would cause catastrophic global climate disruption and worldwide famine with up to 2 billion people at risk of starvation. Our campaign calls for implementing safeguards to prevent nuclear conflict through policies to significantly reduce the U.S. budget for weapons production, remove hair-trigger alert, press for negotiations to abolish all arsenals, and eliminate options for using these weapons first on the sole authority of the president. Our group is a coalition of Valley residents that are not motivated by partisan politics – nuclear weapons are a threat to everyone and everything. All other issues that Grassroots Fund applicants care about will not matter if we do not prevent nuclear war. Many people in New England are already playing a vital role in what has become an international movement. However, because many of our active members are White and over 60, we are committed to building a new generation of campaigners, by supporting a new Western Mass chapter of Students for Nuclear Disarmament (SND).
