Age-Friendly Sullivan
Our Purpose
The purpose for Age-Friendly Sullivan is to create a livable community to enable people of all ages to actively participate in activities and develop solutions to existing challenges. We address social isolation, respect & inclusion, health & community supports, buildings, outside spaces, communication, civic participation, transportation and housing. Since inception in 2018, we coordinated 2 Earth Day cleanups, surveyed residents on quality of life issues, hosted celebrations and outreach events, hosted a health & wellness resource fair, created a Sullivan resource manual, renovated a community room, developed a sand bucket brigade and developed a Neighbor-to-Neighbor friendly calling program. In 2019, we built a community garden to address food insecurity for all residents in Sullivan, with a primary focus on those age 50+. Participation in a community garden has been shown to increase both availability and consumption of fruits and vegetables in households. Throughout the current COVID pandemic, our community has sought various ways to keep our residents engaged in outdoor activities, safely distanced. Many in our community have been extremely challenged economically and socially due to the pandemic. This project helps bring local, organic produce to any household that desires fresh vegetables. We are seeking funding to expand this project to serve more families.
