Age Friendly Saco's purpose is to promote active aging by optimizing opporutunities for health, engagement, and safety while removing barriers that prevent our citizens from remaining in their homes as they age.  This is accomplished through engagement with community organizations as well as collaboration with the City of Saco and the recruitment of community volunteers for the delivery of services that empower residents to remain in and engaged in their community.  Age Frienly Saco truly aims to make Saco a "Community for a Lifetime" by assisting our residents to age in place.  Some of the programs initiated by Age Friendly Saco include a fully accessible community garden created at the community center.  This garden is an intergenerational project by bringing together school-age children at the community center with our older adults to plant, maintain and ultimately harvest the garden together.  At the end of the season, Age Friendly Saco hosts with the City of Saco a farm to table dinner for all participants.We have also implemented a HandyNeighbor program where Age Friendly volunteers provide free maintenance services to hellp residents stay in their homes more safely.We also were able to secure grant funding to make our public beach accessible through the addition of a beach mat.  People with mobility issues can access the beach.We offer socialization events as well as shopping shuttles.
