The Wild Blueberry Collective
Our Purpose
Our mission is to provide and protect permanently accessible outdoor space for our community where people can participate in hands-on learning and have free access to food, nature, and recreation. We are a women-led non-profit fundraising to purchase and protect 158 acres of wild blueberry barrens, forest, and wetlands in Penobscot Territory, now known as Searsport, Maine. Our plan is to open it to the community for access to harvesting, hiking, and learning. We will be offering programs taught by our collective members highlighting their skills, such as art in nature, horticulture, beekeeping, foraging, and food processing. Our goal is to create an outdoor space for all in our county, and those passing through– no matter their age, gender, background or ethnicity, all are welcome. Maine has lost over 100,000 acres of wild blueberry land in less than 100 years, with only about 50,000 acres left. This land has been tended by the Wabanaki for over 10,000 years and is now a big part of what is now known as Maine's culture. We intend to protect some of this glacial carved landscape that provides our community with food and space for recreation.
