Our Purpose

Common Ground Recovery (CGR) was formed to address Vermont’s critical shortage of safe, stable, peer‑supported recovery housing. Our overarching goal is to expand access to dignified, trauma‑informed sober living so Vermonters transitioning from treatment, incarceration, homelessness, or mental health crisis have the stability and community support needed to achieve long‑term recovery. The lack of available beds statewide forces many people into homelessness or unsafe environments before they are ready, and CGR was created to directly confront that gap. While our primary mission is housing, CGR also engages in targeted outreach and education to strengthen the recovery ecosystem around that housing. We meet people where they are—connecting individuals in encampments, hotels, and shelters with resources, delivering meals and harm‑reduction supplies when needed, and offering basic essentials like socks and clothing. We also work with community groups to raise awareness about the need for additional transitional living options and to reduce stigma surrounding substance use and recovery. These outreach and education efforts support the larger goal: ensuring that more Vermonters can access safe, sober, supportive housing and have a fair chance at rebuilding their lives. CGR’s big‑picture vision is a sustainable network of recovery residences that improves recovery outcomes, reduces homelessness, and strengthens community safety across Vermont.
