Sacred Tree Yoga
Our Purpose
In 2018, Angela Cote, Creator of Sacred Tree Yoga received an invitation to voluntarily teach yoga at the Massachusetts Correctional Institution at Norfolk. This is the largest prison in the state. It is rated a medium security prison for 1250 men. In March 2019, the approval was confirmed to initiate a weekly yoga class with 8 students that grew into over 20 participants. The men are receptive, respectful, and cooperative. They have a thirst for learning and discovering more. The 1 hour weekly classes then became 3 hour sessions that included a 1.5 hour yoga practice with a 1.5 hour book study and discussion. During the pandemic, yoga books and dvds were provided to MCI Norfolk as well as the 13 other Massachusetts facilities. On 4/20/21, Angela participated in a DOC volunteer re-orientation. Therefore, it will be anytime now that weekly classes can restart. In addition to restarting weekly classes, there is a new initiative to provide a 200 hour yoga teacher training certification. The goal of this program is to improve prison life; for the incarcerated to have purpose behind the walls. Positive change can reduce the incarcerated men’s aggression, impulsivity, reactivity, and despair. It can also improve their relationships with staff, other prisoners, family/friends, and community. It supports incarcerated people with trauma-informed yoga and mindfulness practices to promote rehabilitation, reduce recidivism and improve public safety.
