Our Purpose

In the immediate, Port City Mutual Aid aims to mitigate the failings of capitalism in our community, primarily the unhoused community. In the longterm, we aim to grow to include anyone who wants to help bring power to those who have been systemically deprived of it in Portland. While our weekly work is mainly composed of unhoused outreach, we are using the power that we are building within our community to position ourselves to better tackle the root issues together. This community building is done primarily through our weekly freestore. The freestore is setup every week between two of Portland's shelters. Our volunteers distribute a variety of goods including hygeine products,  food (both cooked meals and non-perishables), survival gear (tents, tarps, sleeping bags), medical care (both the supplies and the training that is needed to use them), and narcan (100s of kits and trainings of narcan a month). While the distribution of these supplies is paramount to many peoples survival, the freestore is also used to talk about political and social conditions, network, and get to know our unhoused neighbors. Many neighbors volunteer themselves. In summary, our goal is to continue what we do every week, while building connections with other groups and communties so we can reduce our dependence on the systems that are failing us, and build better, more egalitarian, and more accessible ones ourselves. We fully embody a model of solidarity, rather than charity.
