Our Purpose

Through family-oriented educational programming, we aim to promote active uses of the Farmington Canal Heritage Greenway, a linear park and multi-use trail that passes through Newhallville. Once a thriving working class community, the loss of the area’s major employer during the 1980s set the neighborhood into decline, creating a low-income neighborhood. Residents also suffer from disproportionate levels of obesity, type-2 diabetes, and other chronic diseases. We use the Farmington Canal, focusing on a two-block section commonly known as the Learning Corridor, as a unique recreational asset to promote fitness, physical activity and a healthy lifestyle for all ages and ethnic backgrounds. We also organize volunteers and secure landscaping materials to improve the quality of the Learning Corridor greenspace. Finally, we facilitate outdoor education activities about ecology and environmental sustainability.
