Transition Town Jericho (TTJ)
Our Purpose
Our group’s big picture goal is to build greater resiliency on the community/town level. We're an antidote to anxiety over the world's many problems, providing a local outlet for community, involvement and preparing for an unknown future. In the last couple years, our particular focus has gone from food security to including emergency preparedness work and skill building of the local citizenry. The original mission of Transition Town Jericho (TTJ) is still relevant now: “to unleash the collective skills and resources in our town and support grassroots community projects...we strive to nourish, celebrate and sustain each other as a community, preparing ourselves for whatever the future holds." We are part of the worldwide Transition Town movement started in England in 2007, with the belief that the local level (as opposed to individual or national) is the best way to effect sustainable change. We continue doing this work for a few reasons: We have been making progress! Two years ago, we jumpstarted the Jericho-Underhill Food Hub and more recently we started a Resilience Hub in our town, dealing with emergency preparedness on the community level. We now have over 200 people who have attended meetings and are on our mailing list. Our Public Education meetings have grown as well, attracting 20-40 people each month; these presentations on a wide range of resiliency topics promote community connections and often spur follow up groups and action.
