Mission: New Haven/Leon SCP is a binational organization promoting social justice, education and sustainable development in the New Haven and León. The Project was founded in 1984,and has worked since then to promote social justice, build local leadership, and reduce poverty.Today, the primary work of the NH/LSCP in our León, Nicaragua office (run by Nicaraguan staff) is to support community based initiatives in the rural communities of Goyena and Troilo and to facilitate programs that improve public health and community based education, and support women’s rights.. In our New Haven office, we work to build projects and coalitions to confront the climate change crisis, address environmental injustice, and support climate projects that reduce poverty. In both communities we work to build local leadership and capacity and address root causes of poverty and injustice.In 2009 NHLSCP we became more aware of the threat climate change would impose on rural Nicaragua, and what climate change also meant for Connecticut marginalized communities. Based on that reality, we started organizing residents here to advocate for climate policies that both cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and improved the quality of life for low income residents in New Haven.We continue to be inspired by local leaders in New Haven (mostly youth) and Nicaragua (mostly women) who lead education, advocacy, and public health projects that produce concrete benefits for families in both countries.
