Women United Around the World

Our Purpose

Women United Around the World (WUAW) is a nonprofit organization serving immigrant women new to Maine from all national, ethnic, and religious backgrounds. WUAW works with local organizations to promote skills training, leadership development programs, and community inclusion through vocational skills training in professional stitching, mathematics, and technology. These skills enable women to obtain a job, gain financial independence, and inclusion in the local economy.  Our ultimate goal is to create meaningful long-term change in the community and for WUAW to become a platform that uplifts all women and breaks barriers in business. We will expand our technical training options beyond professional stitching and partner with peer organizations to provide more technical training and mentorship opportunities. These could include English language acquisition and conversational English for business success, computer literacy, and entrepreneurship readiness programs that could include microgrants to cover start-up costs. Because mental wellness and self-care are well-known yet overlooked components of professional success, WUAW will work with established partners to create a safe space as a graduate support initiative where immigrant women can access care, fitness, and wellness in a culturally competent environment.
