Our Purpose

Why the group formed: The Town of Jamaica owns just over two undeveloped acres on Water Street, where four houses were washed away in Tropical Storm Irene (2011). The Selectboard formed a town committee in 2022 to review options for using the space in a way that would benefit the community and the environment. The committee proposed the Jamaica Community Pollinator Project. Our multifold purpose is to: (a) remove invasive woody plants, (b) create a wildflower meadow friendly to pollinators; (c) bring members of the community together to support the project in an outdoor, pandemic-friendly activity that mixes ages and segments of the population; (d) create an aesthetic asset for the town that encourages pedestrian activity; (e) maintain a wildlife sanctuary and passage (bear, deer, turkey, fox, etc.) in the heavy vegetation at the back of the lot.Responses regarding "the group" refer to the members of the committee.
