Vermont Climate Union
Our Purpose
The Vermont Climate Union is a statewide spokescouncil structure created to help build unity, power and coordination for the Climate Justice movement and allies in the state (and to the extent possible, the region). A great many people we work with and support object to the "silo-ing" of our efforts and the division of our movement strength, but don't have the time or resources to confront these issues amid their vital campaigns and organiziational mainteneance. The VCU pools efforts, strategic thinking, and cultural captial to build grassroots influence, and to identify further opportunites for intersectional organizing. We recognize the climate crisis is a result of a capitalist culture of extraction and exploitation, and one that demands a momentous response, and so we seek to combine resistance to existing systems with working for alternatives toward the society we envision. In an effort to expand our movement-building focus and to respond to the changing political climate the VCU was born out of the VT Stop the Pipeline Coalition. Many of us are members of the VT Workers Center, and thereby Grassroots Global Justice and the Just Transition movment, and have been involved in trying to adapt Just Transition principles for our rural population and landscape.
