Our Purpose

SWEET’s work over the past two years has been guided by the overarching goal to spread awareness to residents about the problems caused by invasive plant species, and encourage residents to restore and monitor their own properties. Although certain organizations, such as U.S. Fish & Wildlife and Sudbury Valley Trustees, have performed quite admirably in addressing the invasive species issues, SWEET has focused on improving the amount of information and level of interest among the general public with regard to these problems. SWEET’s approach is two-pronged: first, it organizes hands-on volunteer workdays during which resident volunteers can actually remove large invasive plants from valuable public lands; second, it engages in a variety of outreach efforts to better educate the public about invasive plants. In both areas, the group has collaborated with other organizations to improve visibility and achieve greater results. This places SWEET in the unique position of a true grassroots movement that brings together conservation commissioners, scientists, land managers, and ordinary resident volunteers in focused projects and events.
