Our Purpose

Swale, a collaborative floating food project, is dedicated to rethinking and challenging New York City's connection to our food, land, and water. Built on an 80-foot by 30-foot floating barge, Swale contains a gangway entrance, walkways, and an edible forest garden. Swale is at the intersection of public art and public service, providing an experience for visitors as well as free, fresh food. Food forests are a naturally regenerating, resilient, and effective agro-ecosystems, which can, over time, provide free, fresh food. However, food forests on New York City's public land have been off-limits for almost a century for fear that a glut of foragers may destroy an ecosystem. By being on the water, Swale imagines a different world, a different solution.Swale is a mobile, floating food forest that will dock at different piers around New York City's harbor for months at a time in the summer of 2016. With permits and docking sites arranged for the next year, our team is currently working towards solidifying a long term home for Swale, as well as working towards policy change on the ground.
