Sage Mountain Botanical Sanctuary
Our Purpose
Our purpose is to serve as a sanctuary for plants, wildlife, and humans. Our focus is conservation strategies that center whole ecosystems, habitat restoration and protect at-risk and threatened plant species as well as keystone wildlife species that frequent our six-hundred acre sanctuary. We seek to create educational opportunities through our land conservation so that other landowners can center their efforts in holistic conservation and community access. We work with foster care, domestic violence and juvenile justice programs to bring individuals into nature that would not otherwise have access. By educating individuals and communities about local flora and fauna, we seek to inspire environmental stewardship. By teaching non-timber forest cultivation, we seek to inspire living economies not centered on resource extraction but rather habitat restoration. We use our sanctuary as a hub for educational programs that emphasize therapeutic benefits of nature, including nature therapies for grief, trauma, end-of-life, and mental health. We provide these programs in-person and are shifting to online platforms to reach more individuals. In addition, our sanctuary is the base for the Grief Care Project, a program offering holistic tools and remedies to provide relief for healthcare workers on the frontlines of community tragedies. The project was birthed from the Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando and now serves nurses in New England and around the country treating COVID-19.
