Our Purpose

Rivers & Roads is currently working in Fryeburg, Maine to close aspirational gaps affecting local teens in our Oxford County area. Fryeburg has been under invested in, like many rural communities. This has led to an opportunity gap: mental health issues, lack of motivation, lack of hope and optimism. Many teens who participate with Rivers & Roads programs have little or no access to resources when school is not in session. After 2 years of providing free summer programs, we learned our participants need more than a one-off activity. Our young people need year-round, relationship centered programming that provides 360 degrees of support from caring adults and peer mentors. To provide this support, Rivers & Roads designed Dreamcatchers, a long term cohort-based mentoring model program that starts in the 7th grade, in partnership with Aspirations Incubator, MSAD 72 school district, and the Fryeburg Recreational Center.Dreamcatchers is a six-year youth development mentorship program that lasts to and through high school graduation. We provide engaging programming, in-school academic support, mentoring, field excursions, community collaborative workshops, weekday and weekend transportation, and meals. We want all students to not only survive their middle school years - we want our students to thrive!Rivers & Road’s mission and big picture goal is to create a path to purpose for young individuals growing up in rural Maine who feel they have none.
