Pleasant Street Community Garden
Our Purpose
Our group, the Pleasant Street Community Garden (PSCG), proposes to re-establish a community garden near the city center on the site of the John Zon Community Center (JZCC), and the former home of the PSCG. The requested funding will help to complete the initial phase of development of the new garden with the purchase of an 8’ x 12’ garden shed to house tools and equipment. Partial funding for the shed has been recently secured. The PSCG operated on this former school grounds site for 20 years, until the town decided to build a new community center on the site. The former PSCG was dormant for several years while building on the JZCC progressed. Some former PSCG gardeners and some new friends have come together to liaise with the John Zon Community Center staff to redevelop the PSCG now that the building project is completed. We realize that we have a unique opportunity to implement a new, improved vision for community gardening in the city of Greenfield in this revitalized location--to consider challenges and successes of the former PSCG experience--as we build up the new iteration. We hope to meet the needs for Greenfield gardeners who lack space for a garden plot at their home or apartment. We also plan to demonstrate best practices for composting, crop rotation, vertical gardening, soil improvement, etc., so that new and master gardeners can create successful demonstration plots as well as designated personal plots.
