The Malden Community Land Trust (CLT) is a grassroots, resident-led initiative to create and preserve permanently affordable housing for working-class people in Malden, MA. A fiscally sponsored project of City Life / Vida Urbana, the CLT was launched after a longtime Malden resident pledged her family home for community use, inspired by local tenant organizing. In her will, she donated her single family house to CLVU with the vision that sparked the CLT’s first project: transforming a vacant home into permanently affordable housing for two households by adding an accessible ADU and making critical health, safety, and energy upgrades.The CLT is stewarded by a five-member committee including local tenant leaders and CL/VU staff. We meet on a monthly basis. Its long-term goal is to remove land from the speculative market, educate residents about social housing, and build collective power to resist displacement. As the CLT grows, it will serve as a replicable model for grassroots land and housing justice in Malden.
