Kids Cooking Green
Our Purpose
Teaching children cooking skills and the value of eating healthy, locally grown food. This is a 5 week after school program, taught in schools and rec centers in Lexington, Arlington, Medford, Bedford and Wilmington, and expanding rapidly. The class is for 5th graders, although for some towns recreation department it is open to other ages. Class includes cooking; discussion of locally grown food; farm or farmers market visit; discussion with a nutritionist about healthy diet; smoothie competition; planning, cooking and serving a group dinner for parents in a professional kitchen with help from a local professional chef; and a visit by a New England Aquarium member who discusses food from the ocean. We would like to grow this program to include education for high school kids, including cooking classes, and visits to local high schools to offer a presentation titled "What does my hamburger have to do with global warming?"
