Headwaters Community Trust
Our Purpose
Our purpose is to care for our neighbors and strengthen our communities by creating permanently affordable homes and access to community owned land. The long-term viability of our communities is threatened by the dramatic rise in wealth inequality that defines our culture at large and makes our communities vulnerable to forces beyond our control. People who want to make their living here, can’t afford to live here. Headwaters was founded as a community land trust in 2024 to create shared equity opportunities in our area. Shared equity homeownership is a self-sustaining model that takes a one-time investment to make a home affordable for a lower-income household, and then restricts the home's sale price each time it is sold to keep it affordable for subsequent generations of owners. The same shared equity model can be applied to land held by the Trust for other community-benefitting uses such as child and elder care centers, small scale farming, resource-based enterprises, and cooperative housing. Our goal is to balance wealth building for people who would otherwise be unable to afford living and working here, with preserving the community’s investment in the land.
