Duxbury Community Garden
Our Purpose
The Duxbury Community Garden was reestablished in 2006 by the Waterbury-Duxbury Food Council. Jeanne began to officially manage it, in 2018. The half-acre lot was divided into 18, approximately 20’x20’ plots. In 2019, rents were established at $21 and $28 each, though not all plots were rented. In 2024, rents were between $25-$35 allowing for a $500 annual budget. Through the years, our improvements include: 2 x 300 gallon water tanks (one on a trailer for transport), hoses, two cold-compost areas, a fabric shed, a fabric greenhouse, a lawn mower, picnic table and lawn chairs, a fire pit, a soil sifter, hand tools, larger tools, a post driver and a resource library. Many of the smaller items were donated. We bring in aged horse manure, aged hay, raw wood chips and hope to bring in commercial compost. While Jeanne is at the Garden every Friday from noon until 7, she is also there 4-5 times a week for Gardener guidance. Our goals include making growing food, flowers and medicinal plants rewarding. Many of our Gardeners arrive with little to no experience or resources. With access to Jeanne, other Gardeners, the Library, tools, manure, wood chips water and garden chairs, our Gardeners have what they need to be successful growers. Successful growers will be able to feed their families, extended families and friends healthy, organically grown food while beautifying and enjoying spaces with flowers and learning about and using medicinal plants.
