Our Purpose

Don't Waste ME formed through community organizing to move Maine toward the goal of zero waste.  We want to move the State of Maine to more sustainable, ecological practices congruent with our state's statutory hierarchy of reuse, recycle, incinerate, with landfilling as the last option. Unfortunately, that is not how Maine is handling waste presently. The volume of waste annually going to Maine landfills and waste-to-energy incinerators has been growing for the last six years and those facilities are also taking a greater amount of  waste generated by towns and cities, according to a January report. DWME advocates for responsible policies to protect the environment and health of communities at risk from current harmful worst practice impacts of landfill, incinerator, leachate and sludge disposal. DWME was formed by neighbors and concerned citizens who directly experience the negative impacts; we want a future where Maine citizens don't suffer from the negative impacts of landfills and waste incinerators.  We want to change current policy that doesn’t comply with known best practices, including stopping out of state waste dumping into our state-owned landfill, the least desirable option. DWME goals include requiring Casella Waste Management, which runs the facility to treat and frequently test landfill leachate and most critically, stop all landfill leachate by-products from being directly discharged into the rivers of Maine.
