Our Purpose

Dharma Gates' goal is to open opportunities for authentic meditation practice to young adults, empowering them to embrace ethical behavioral change as they work to build a better society. Against a backdrop of grave environmental and socioeconomic challenges, we support emerging leaders in developing fundamental qualities of heart and mind including physical and mental wellbeing, kindness and compassion. Dharma Gates emerged out of a student-run meditation group at Wesleyan University; the nonprofit was founded by Aaron and Nicky during their last year in college. At Wesleyan, we saw many young people who cared deeply about the social and ecological crises we face, but who were often incapicitated in their abilities to be of service by shame, self-doubt, anxiety, and depression. By working to eliminate conceptual, logistical, and financial barriers to meditation training opportunities, we aim to equip young people with the psychological resilience and internal tools to face the massive social and ecological challenges with deep clarity and compassion. We aim to introduce participants to various meditation centers, techniques, high-quality instructors, and a community of like-minded peers. By not associating with any particular lineage of practice, we allow participants to form (or not) their own relationships with styles of practice that are a good fit for them.
