Design Challenge Network
Our Purpose
Our purpose is to empower high school teachers and high school students through Design Challenge Learning. Design Challenges are collaborative, competitive learning experiences in which student teams identify a problem they care about, design a new solution to address it, create a paper and video, and defend their work in front of a panel of judges. By working with teachers who want to implement design challenges in their classroom, we seek to transform teaching and learning, as this process has been shown to increase student and teacher agency, the learning of key academic content and skills, and improve teaching practice. Students choose to address problems the are environmental (50%) and related to social equity issues (25%) and health issues (25%). We empower teachers to create student changemakers with the confidence, optimism, and skill to have an impact of their local and global communities. For the below question on decision-makers, we define that as our nonprofit board, executive director, and the 13 teachers we worked with during the 2024-25 school year. These teachers are the main drivers of program execution each year (the teaching they do with their students) and the staff and board takes their feedback into account each year in order to provide them what they need and to implement suggestions they make.
