Our Purpose

Cape Downwinders is a community-based public health, environmental, and nuclear safety organization committed to protecting the people and environment of Southeastern Massachusetts and Cape Cod.Since the 1980s, we have educated and organized communities to address the health, safety, and environmental risks associated with the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station. Today, Pilgrim's closure has ushered in a new era of decommissioning, radioactive waste management, and long-term spent fuel storage by Holtec International. Our mission is to ensure that Holtec's decommissioning is conducted safely, responsibly, transparently, and with meaningful public oversight. We advocate for secure, hardened storage of spent nuclear fuel and protection of Cape Cod Bay and our air from radioactive releases. We oppose the discharge of radioactive industrial wastewater into Cape Cod Bay and the evaporation of radioactive wastewater into the atmosphere. We demand transparency, independent monitoring, rigorous regulatory oversight, and meaningful public participation. We also oppose new nuclear reactors, including SMRs, at Pilgrim or elsewhere in Massachusetts. New nuclear development must address safety, affordability, radioactive waste, environmental impacts, security, and financial risks to taxpayers and ratepayers. We work with diverse communities and organizations to educate, organize, advocate, and protect our right to participate in decisions affecting our health, environment, and future.
