Cambridge Wildlife Puppetry Project
Our Purpose
The purpose of the Cambridge Wildlife Puppetry Project is to create the building blocks of environmental stewardship among children and families who are residents of Cambridge, Massachusetts. We foster learning about and engagement with the natural habitats, animals, and plants in our city, paving the way for people of all walks of life and linguistic backgrounds to forge their own personal connections to nature. Our unconventional medium for this is puppetry arts. Our version of arts activism enables children, youth, and families to make those connections through creating giant wildlife puppets and costumes and wearing and carrying them at community events and parades such as the annual Honk! Parade, the annual Fresh Pond Day, and the Cambridge Science Festival. We are committed to environmental justice, serving populations who are underserved in the arts, and reaching out to immigrant families through community partnerships and bilingual materials. We want to do this work because we feel our informal education approach, in largely family settings, is an important and effective way to connect especially the young residents of the city to the vital open spaces that belong to the city or are within municipal boundaries. Without durable and multi-stranded connections of young city residents to nature, conservation of our natural resources and concerns for environmental health will not be strong.
