Our Purpose
The BJAMS After School Community Garden Program will promote life-long healthy eating habits while connecting students to the natural world. We believe that students will quickly show improvements in environmental behavior while learning to respect nature. They will grow to have better attitudes towards fruits, vegetables, and an overall positive approach to the consumption of healthy foods. The main components of the program are creating a hands on learning environment, formulating a better understanding of ecosystems through observation in gardening, and experimenting with growing a sustainable system. The school garden can become a place to enrich teaching efforts during and after school with powerful hands-on experiences that make learning come alive. We are hopeful that the garden will produce enough to fill the needs of a healthy living cooking class. Students will learn how to grow their own foods, prepare healthy meals with the foods, and then donate the meals or snacks to homeless shelters or local nursing homes as community projects of charity and service.
