Community Gleaning: A How To Guide

Group Details

Salvation Farms is a community-based gleaning project that coordinates with farms and volunteers to salvage farm surplus and donate it to local emergency food sites, educational and care giving institutions, retirement communities, non-profits and the Vermont Foodback.

The group’s successes so far include: increasing the amount of farm fresh food made available to local distribution sites by 100% in two growing seasons; gleaning more that 88,000 pounds of produce distributed to more than 40 sites in the first 3 years of operation; working consistently with 16 local farms across the state of Vermont coordinating over 100 volunteers and gleaners.

The group, located in Wolcott (VT), received its latest grant in March 2007 to promote and creat strategic business plans for community-based gleaning and to support an educational outreach component focused on food security.
