Group Details

The mission of Groundwork Somerville is to bring about the sustained revitalization, improvement and management of the physical environment by developing community-based partnerships, which empower people, businesses and organizations to promote environmental, economic and social well-being.

The group’s successes so far include: creation of 7 schoolyard gardens; involvement of over 300 people in the gardens, Summer 2008; hiring and participation of 20 high schoolers involving over 150 youth per year; in-school gardening programming involving more than 800 young people; summer camp involving 150 young people in the gardens; redevelopment of two brownfields into community garden space (Groundwork Sommerville did the outreach).

The group, located in Somerville (MA), received its latest Boston Grants Initiative grant in March 2009 to create a new program this year, Somerville SoilCycle, a youth, community and volunteer run program looking to empower Somerville small businesses and residents to compost. Based on successful models from across the United States, Somerville SoilCycle is a fee-for-service compost pick-up, management, and educational program.
