G.A.L.A.‘s goal is nothing short of global sustainability. In a nutshell, G.A.L.A.‘s plan to achieve this bold initiative is by celebrating sustainable solutions one community at a time. Starting in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, off the eastern shores of Lake Winnepesaukee, the group is developing a local-action model to help communities move toward sustainability. Today, this model consists of two main programs – one focused on community service and education, and the other on advocacy. Respectively, these programs are Sustainability in Action: Building social capital while restoring ecological integrity and Sustainability Three-Pillar Project: Strengthening relationships between society, economy, and ecology.

The group’s successes so far include several well-attended community events, including a monthly environmental/social justice film series, an informational table at the Wolfeboro Farmers’ Market, Community Study Circles, Themed Community Potlucks, and a Homesteading Workshop Series. G.A.L.A. has also created a “Buy Wisely Local Guide” and an online Forum space for community members to discuss G.A.L.A.‘s projects and events.

The group, located in Wolfeboro (NH) received its latest NEGEF grant in April 2008 to finance professional nonprofit consultation on membership development, business planning, organizational design, and capital campaign management in order to effectively manage multiple projects, including a farmers’ market, community garden, study circle, film series, buy wisely-local campaign, and homesteading workshop.
